Despite the impressive growth of the Cameroonian urban music scene, we have come across a few issues that need instant attention and that need to be addressed since everyone seems scared to talk about this openly.
It might be a budding industry full of inexperience, fear and lack of focus but it is still an industry that requires standards, the right skillset, hard work, discipline and most importantly professionalism. TheHotJem.com has come up with five reasons why Cameroonian record labels are not okay.
1. Unprofessionalism
You noticed how we spelled “UNPROFESSIONALISM” all in capital letters to emphasize how bad it is!) Most Cameroonian record labels are still completely alien to the concept of company branding and proper presentation. As a record label you have an image and reputation to uphold; locally, call this packaging. How do you expect artists or even fans to respect your business when you don’t present it properly?
For example, some Cameroonian record labels don’t even have a website or logo. Those that do have empty wensites, no relevant content, and the website is not updated regularly. How do they survive? Even Wikipedia can’t answer that. As for the logo, they have unprofessional ‘Microsoft word’ logos.
My question is, if as a label you don’t brand yourself professionally, then how do you expect to get endorsement deals, project proposals, or important calls from ‘well known and well branded’ organizations? As we would like to coin this statement, “Dans le monde du showbizness, l’habit fait le moine”.
