Why do African’s feel the need to have to still wear a white bridal gown and the groom – a suit or tux when they get married?
Who’s tradition are we following with the white gown and suit when we have our beautiful African traditional wear that represents who we are?
Just take a look at the newly weds in this photo. Isn’t what they are wearing is good enough for a wedding? It shows that they are proud of who they are so why do we need to wear white and a western style suit for the church wedding?
Why do we even have two weddings to begin with? Maybe if we can have one wedding where the couple to be can wear their traditional outfits and not label it as a “traditional wedding” but simply as a wedding when back in the day, there was always just one wedding until the colonial masters showed up with Christianity and all.
Thankfully, over the years, more and more couples are moving away from wearing suits and/or white wedding gowns and are embracing their culture with more African looking stylish outfits for their church and court wedding.
Like men “funkyfying”their suits with African print designs or patterns (if they really want to wear a suit) while the women are making beautiful majestic-like gowns using African print and designs.
If everyone did this, then it will become the norm.
In the words of Witty Minstrel, let’s “Be Proud Of Who We Are.”
