A look at the controversy surrounding Cabrel Nanjip’s brand ambassadorial deal with Amie.
Cabrel Nanjip Nyamton is a very popular comedian from Central Africa who has grown to become a social media inflouencer through his comedic skits. As a french speaking Cameroonian, Cabrel’s popularity expands outside of his country within the continent to other french speaking countries like Ivory Coast, and DRC Congo to name a few.
Nanjip is one of the revelations in the comedy industry who recently secured an endorsement deal as brand ambassador with a hygienic pad company popularly known as Amie and this has sparked a huge controversy all over social media.
While many are celebrating Cabrel’s money earning win, many others have criticized the company’s choice of ambassador, suggesting a woman would have been in a better position to advertise their product as men have nothing to do with Menstruation since they do not have one.
My Thoughts
In my opinion, I find nothing wrong with the company trying to expand their market sphere and using an influential person to bolster sales and sensitize on the use of sanitary pads.
In an African society where most women still face body shaming and appear to be uncomfortable during menstruation mainly because they cannot express themselves or open up to men when they are going through menstrual stress, there is a need to reduce this stigma and start getting men involved in menstrual activities so as to make ladies feel comfortable in themselves and seek for assistance when needed.
I also know that in Cameroon, most people don’t get deserving deals especially with the “man know man” issue, but for a well calculated marketing strategy and from the influence point of view, chooosing the comedian as brand ambassador for the company goes down positively with me, except he has no clue about sanitary pad use and lacks the drive to sensitize women on Menstruation.
Again, the deal he signed with the company also matters. It could just be that the company just wants to use him to drive sales (which should be one of their key goals).
