In less than a year of signing with US-based Steven’s Music Entertainment (SME), the home of Daphne, Boy Tag and others, Ewube released her EP called Renaissance and her first video C’est Toi is now on YouTube. The singer is the second SME artist to release an EP. Renaissance is an Afro-Centric 7 track EP which will introduce listeners to the versatile world of Ewube’s music. Dubbed the “Dance Hall Queen”, you will quickly find that Ewube packs more variety in her musical jukebox than just dancehall vibes.
The EP which opens with “Pour Toi”, a slow jam that climaxes multiple times into Ewube’s dancehall comfort zone, is written by Mr. Leo and Ewube. This song puts in words the feeling of love creeping on you in ways that you want to celebrate in dance, tears and prayers. Vocally, this song stands her out as one of the best singers of her generation and the Music by Akwandor and Tillish is equally outstanding.
The second track on the EP is “Ndollo” a song that’s steeped in the melodies of Makossa, zouk and a considerable dose of dancehall. Combined with Ewube’s signature delivery, “Ndollo” exemplifies the sweet affection given and received from the object of your love. Produced by Akwandor, you will enjoy the sweet guitar accompaniment that makes this song so addictive.
“Laisse Moi T’aimer” is the perfect follow-up to the second track. This song is an emotional plea by a woman madly in love who will give mind, body and soul to be in the arms of her lover. This song samples the classic “Sexual Healing” by Marvin Gay mixed with a flavor of zouk drum patterns. Produced by DJ Karl, it continues to show Ewube’s broad range and ability to deliver on any track.
Up next is “Bouger”. Produced by DJ Karl, this song is all reggae with a tinge of contemporary dancehall elements to capture the spirit of freedomwhich is the subject of the song. Ewube sends a message of freedom of expression in all forms; unapologetically not caring about any judgment. One life, one love.
How do you break-up with someone who has loved you and haven’t done anything wrong for you to leave them? Ewube takes a go at this delicate topic in Kpé Kpé (all/everything). An Afro beat song produced by Akwandor, the track is infused with Mexican guitars in part because Ewube got inspired to write this song while watching a Mexican Tele novela.
Ewube exudes all kinds of vocal confidence in T.H. (Too High/ Trop High) produced by Mageek Feengaz. The song is about a tumultuous relationship where you are never quite sure where you stand. But u keep on holding on to it because of what you are hoping it’ll be. In this state of mind, you’re always high on moving on but worried about what awaits you in the next relationship. In her comfort zone, you can see why they call her the Cameroonian Dancehall Queen.
As sad a song as the lyrics to “Hey Baby” will make you feel, the final track of the EP will leave you loving every note of this track produced by the indefatigable DJ Karl.Written in an emotional state of heart break, Hey Baby captured perfectly that moment and gave her an outlet to “sulk”. Written as a letter to her lover, Ewube tells him she still loves him and misses him but understands he has someone else now. This is the perfect hello-goodbye song and what better genre to express love not reciprocated than R&B. It will be on repeat when you take a listen.
The EP closes out with a bonus track “C’est Toi” which was her first release with Stevens Music. Asked about this project, Ewube says she is:
excited to finally deliver on this project. It’s my first major release and I have put in it my all. There is going to be a song that speak to everyone on this EP and I am excited to share this specially curated body of work with the world… this is literally me to the world!”
