Ananda Lewis, the popular former MTV VJ and talk show host, has sadly passed away at the age of 52 after a long and difficult battle with breast cancer. Her death was announced on June 11, 2025, by her sister Lakshmi Emory, who shared an emotional message saying Ananda was now “free” and in peace. The news brought great sadness to many people who admired her for her talent, beauty, intelligence and bravery. She was a strong voice for women and young people, especially during the late 1990s and early 2000s, when she became a household name as one of the most charismatic hosts on television.
Ananda first became well known when she worked on BET’s Teen Summit in the 1990s before joining MTV, where she quickly rose to fame. She was not just a face on the screen. She was also deeply passionate about issues like education, women’s rights and social justice. She later hosted her own daytime talk show and became a role model for many young women. Her presence on television was warm, intelligent and full of life. That is why her illness and eventual death touched so many people across the world.
In 2020, Ananda made a brave and emotional video where she revealed that she had been secretly battling stage three breast cancer. She explained that she had kept it private for a long time because she did not want people to treat her differently or feel sorry for her. But when the disease became more serious, she decided to share her story so that others, especially Black women, could learn from it and take their health seriously. Ananda believed strongly in natural medicine and at first she refused to do chemotherapy or surgery. She especially declined a double mastectomy, which is a surgery that removes both breasts to stop the cancer from spreading.
Instead, Ananda chose alternative treatments like detox diets, herbs and holistic care. She said she feared radiation and chemotherapy because of their harsh side effects and because she had lost people close to her due to those treatments. She was hopeful that her body could heal naturally. For some time, she managed to live a normal life and kept her cancer under control. But unfortunately, the cancer continued to grow. Over time, it progressed to stage four, which means it spread to other parts of her body and became very difficult to treat.
Later on, Ananda opened up about regretting her early decisions. In a 2024 interview, she admitted that not doing the mastectomy when doctors first advised her might have allowed the cancer to spread faster. She encouraged women to get regular mammograms and to not delay medical care out of fear. She said she wished she had taken different steps earlier and wanted others to learn from her experience. In one of her last public messages, she said, “Early detection is the real cure.” Her words showed how much she cared about others, even while she was suffering herself.
As her illness grew worse, Ananda became more private. But those close to her, like her sister and her longtime friend Stephanie Elam, stayed by her side. Just before her death, Ananda sent a final message saying she was at peace and full of love. Stephanie read that message on CNN with tears in her eyes, saying that Ananda told her friends to celebrate life and not to cry too much for her. Her final words showed the same grace, strength and wisdom that she always had throughout her life.
Ananda Lewis leaves behind her son, her family, her many friends and a generation of people who were touched by her work and her heart. She was more than a television host. She was a teacher, a fighter and an inspiration. Her story is a powerful reminder that health is not something we should take lightly. Her honesty about her mistakes and her strength during her final years will be remembered. She may be gone, but her voice will continue to speak through the lives she touched.
