A few days ago, South African singer Aux Alaio took to #Twitter to lament about not having received his royalties from the 2010 World Cup hit song “Waka Waka (This song For Africa)” which currently has over 3.5 billion views on YouTube.
The young South African singer was a backup singer for the song 13-years ago, and was 13-years-old at the time. He recalls that he was just a kid and could not read his contract thoroughly at the time. However, he wants his royalties paid.
Still haven’t received my royalties for singing backup on this song.
I mean, yes I was 13 and didn’t read the contract thoroughly before signing but still, I want my coin.
He further went on to make a shocking claim as he Tweeted,
The part that cracks me up is that Shakira’s team was told that we were AIDS orphans and they pounced on us! booked us the finest hotels and we literally lived with Shakira for 2 weeks.”
Shakira had been sued for sampling the original song by the original composers of the track who are Cameroonian and go by the name of Zankalewa. She had also publicly lied that she wrote
the song.
