BEHIND THE MUSIC WITH ‘RASTAFARI’ SINGER AND SONGWRITER DAPHNE
THJ: You seem to have an interesting mix of R&B, Neo soul and a Reggae-like feel to your music and I see that you are also a songwriter. How long have you been singing for and where do you get your inspiration from to write a song?
Daphne: I have been singing since I was a kid. I started singing at my church choir in Douala, Cameroon. I recorded my own tracks in 2013. God is my main source of inspiration and then my mum. However, I get inspiration from some Gospel and secular artists. My life experiences also influence my writing.
THJ: Your single ‘Rastafari’ has created a lot of buzz among the younger Cameroonian generation. Why do you think this single was so successful?
Daphne: It is a rare one for a song, so it catches people’s attention. It is a song that appeals to present life situations, a song preaching hope and love above all its divine favor. I think it’s because it is something new and the title ‘Rastafari’ is a rare one for a song, so it catches people’s attention. It is a song that appeals to present life situations, a song preaching hope and love above all its divine favor.
