Cameroonian Opposition Leader Seeks Safety In The Gambia
Cameroonian opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary has moved to The Gambia after saying his life was in danger in Cameroon. The announcement came from The Gambian government, which explained that he arrived on 7 November and was allowed to stay because his situation required humanitarian assistance. This means The Gambia accepted him for his own safety while tensions continue to rise after the recent presidential election in Cameroon.
Tchiroma Bakary has strongly rejected the official results of the 12 October election. He claims he is the real winner and believes the final results were manipulated to give President Paul Biya another term in office. President Biya is ninety two years old and has been in power for forty three years. According to the official figures, he received 53.7% of the votes while Tchiroma Bakary came second with 35.2%. Many observers have questioned the integrity of the election and accused the government of fraud.
The situation became more tense when the Cameroonian government said it would put Tchiroma Bakary on trial for encouraging violent demonstrations after the election. He denied this accusation and instead blamed the security forces for using force against protesters. The government said sixteen people were killed during the unrest, but some independent groups claim the number of deaths is higher.
Tchiroma Bakary has said many times that he will continue to oppose Biya’s government until his claim of victory is accepted. His strategy has included calling on the public to hold protests and to observe what he calls ghost town operations where people stay indoors and cities become empty. These actions are meant to show that many citizens support him and want political change.
Before becoming an opposition leader, Tchiroma Bakary held important positions in Biya’s government. His move from a government minister to a strong challenger has surprised many people in Cameroon. His decision to leave the country happened quietly, and for weeks nobody knew where he was. There were rumours that he had escaped to another African country, but nothing was confirmed until The Gambia made its statement.
The Gambian government explained that it gave him temporary refuge out of African solidarity and to prevent further harm as diplomatic efforts continue. At the same time, The Gambia made it clear that its territory will not be used for organising activities against Cameroon. This was an important message to avoid political tension between the two countries.
The statement from The Gambia also generated debate within the country. The main opposition party in The Gambia, the United Democratic Party, criticised the government for delaying the public announcement of Tchiroma Bakary’s arrival. They said the delay raised concerns about openness and accountability. However, they also expressed pride that their country was able to offer safety to someone who is facing political pressure, since they know from experience how difficult life can become for people who challenge a powerful government.
This situation remains sensitive. Many African governments and international observers are watching closely to see how Cameroon and The Gambia will handle it. The focus now is on finding a peaceful and diplomatic way forward to ease the political tension and to protect the lives of citizens who want their voices to be heard.
