In Hollywood or anywhere there are celebrities, it is usually shocking to see an A-list celebrity couple in a relationship that lasts for more than three years. If you’re asking why, that is the case, I’m here to tell you – that is the million dollar question.
This is why, when a celebrity couple are in a relationship with the same person for let’s say seven years as is the case with Gabriel Union and her man Dwayne Wade, it is quite shocking. Sad but true! Wade and Union started dating in 2009 and later got married in 2014 which means they’ve been together for over 12 years and married for seven years.
We are seeing the drama that went down between popular Nigerian actress Tonto Dikeh and her ex-husband Olakunle Churchill. Their marital issues were in the public eye and their divorce was ugly. We would never wish for any couple (celebrity or not) to go through such rough times even in the process of divorce and in the public eye.
Going back to where we started, and seeing celebrities usually starting off very happy in their new relationships to splitting up, here are four reasons why we think this happens:
1) As a celebrity, your life is in the public eye and so people see almost everything you do. It’s like living in a glass house for all to see your clean and dirty laundry. There is no hiding and this can cause a lot of stress to both parties in the relationship especially if one of the couples is not a celebrity and is not used to the limelight. It is stressful enough when people are prying into your everyday life, but it is even more stressful when its the public doing so.
2) Celebrities have a lot of access to many things. Celebrity men have access to lots of women and groupies who will stop at nothing and will do almost anything to be with the male celebrity regardless of his relationship or marital status. Most women are fine having one night stands with a male celebrity as it is like some sort of trophy or an achievement to them and this poses a huge threat to the celebrity’s wife, girlfriend or partner and celebrity men tend to have a higher chance of cheating due to this type of easy access to women.
This is one major reason why many women say they will not date a man who is in the limelight. Yes, we know that female celebrities have access to men too, but it’s different with women. In an industry where men dominate, women tend to sometimes stay in their lane.
3) Celebrity couples tend to have an unspoken subtle competition. If the female is more popular or makes more money, it might hurt her celebrity man’s ego. Imagine if people always say Gabriel Union’s husband or Gabriel Union and her husband did this or that… and not the other way around., it could make Dwayne Wade feel bad or feel less of a man since society has depicted men as the dominant ones and not the other way around. Men do not like that feeling at all.
4) Believe it or not, some celebrities get married to have a bigger status collectively and one which is beneficial to both of them. Remember when Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got married in the good old days before they got divorced? Everyone seemed to be obsessed with them and talked about them around the clock. In fact, they were talked about a lot more as a married couple than when they were just Brad and Angelina and especially now that they have gone their separate ways, you don’t hear abou them as much as before.
We’re not saying Brad and Angelina got married for that reason but it’s an example that if they did, then they achieved their goal.
Everyday life and pressures from friends, family, work and everything else in between also plays a huge role in our relationships with those we love. It is sad to see people in the limelight deal with breakups publicly.
