In 1987, Burkina Faso and Africa as a whole, lost one of it’s most influential political figured when Thomas Sankara, who was fighting for the well-being of people of the Sahel, was assassinated.
The reasons behind his assassination according to Blaise Compaoré, were that of the f Sankara had jeopardized foreign relations with the former colonial power, France, and with neighboring Ivory Coast. Compaoré also accused his former comrade of plotting to assassinate political opponents.
With Sankara gone in 1987, it would take Burkina Faso exactly 37 years to witness a resurgence and the rise of another leader reminiscent of Sankara.

Five months after Sankara’s death, Ibrahim Traoré was born. Today at 37, he is standing up for his people.
According to multiple sources, his quest to make his country a great nation and independent of the West, has attracted not only criticism but conspiracy and alleged attempts on his life. It’s alleged that he has avoided approximately 20 assassination attempts in 2025 alone.
Given how Sankara, Muhamad Gadaffi, and other prominent African leaders were taken out, the stakes are high for Ibrahim if he follows the aamw path. The hood thing is, he’s not allowing any of that affect his work ethic and vision for his country. He’s ready to serve his countru no matter what lies ahead.
One thing is certain; if they succeed in taking him out as they have with other powerful African leaders in the past, there will be no undoing what Mr. Traoré has accomplished in such a short time.
