CAN WOMEN RUN RECORD LABELS BETTER THAN MEN?
There’s a saying that goes, “What a man can do, a woman can do more better…”. Looks like we are on for such a silent challenge in the music industry.
For a few hours now, Ebude Kate aka Kameni has been subject to some fan criticism, after announcing the creation of her own record label called “Rude Gyal Nation”. As unconvincing as it may seem to her critics, it is important to note that she is only one of the few female artists to even think about creating her own label.
Just a couple of years after becoming one of the hottest female artists in the industry under Lionn Productions, she went solo after parting ways, and a year later, she has been working towards creating her own record label, something that is now a reality.
While many music fans might not be used to having female record label owners around here, this might be a good time to give women a try in this area too. Instead of being steadfast on the fact that it won’t work, what if this goes on to work?
It’s understandable, that most music fans have not seemingly forgiven her for leaving Lionn Productions for whatever reason, but it is a bitter pill they have to swallow because Kameni is not going back.
Firstly, applauding Kameni, for taking this bold step and encouraging her to do better might just be a great step.
While she has been under fire since her announcement, fans are still to uncover whether her new label will dive immediately into signing other artists or will only focus on herself for now. Fans have also wondered if her label has been legally registered and most of those questions sound quite condescending to assume it is not, but again, most fans are just wondering
With what Blanche Bailly, for instance, has been able to build with “HitZone” for the past five years, Kameni might also want to go down that road with her own record label.
Blanche hasn’t signed any artists under her wing, but she has been a great business woman; one of the most successful artists of her generation, with a traceable run of successes, from music streaming numbers to brand deals and businesses she owns.
For most of these female artists, if they get to do their homework and have the right partners onboard, there is a high chance that they will succeed with many ventures, and creating record labels might not be an exception!
In as much as we’ve seen many of these record labels rise and fall in just a short time, it might be too early to write-off Kameni’s ambitions.
It’s a business with a 50/50 chance of succeeding or failing, but one thing we cannot rule out completely, is people’s efforts to live their own dream. So wether it fails or not, it’s a risk Kameni needs to take to have a peace of mind that she at least tried it. Afterall, one never starts a new venture with the idea of failing. So why not give her a chance?
In an industry where most label owners are men, do you think women can do better?
