Today makes it exactly one week since rapper Jovi released his first ever mixtape titled Young Vizu Anointed Mboko Supreme (YVAMS). This adds to his collection of awesome contributions to the music industry. We won’t be focusing on the content here since his content has hardly been an issue – he has always delivered with class!
Did Jovi really sell 10,000 copies of his mixtape in 24 hours after its release?
Just 24 hours after the release of this mixtape, there was viral social media reports that he had sold 10,000 copies. This didn’t come from Jovi himself but alledegly from his close friend and marketing partner. One mixtape is sold at 2,500 FCFA (approximately $5). Selling 10,000 copies will sum up to a total of 25, 000,000 FCFA (approximately $50,000).
Possible reasons why Jovi made this sum and more…
Given that Jovi has raised the bar high in his marketing and commercial efforts over the years, there are other possible reasons to suggest why it was very easy for him to have made this amount in that space of time without any doubts.
In as much as many social media users and fans of the artist were excited about the report without doubts, there were still a crowd that vehemently denied this possibility.
However, with Jovi being a frontline Cameroonian rapper who even goes toe to toe with other established foreign rappers like the Sarkodie, M.I, Manifest, just to name a few, it should be noted that he has attracted several listeners away from home over the past few years who have equally become consumers of his music.
With this music (mixtape) being sold digitally and strictly on his newly established music distribution platform Jengu, the purchase was eased coupled with the fact that after his Pressure EP was released, it was given out for free to everyone who signed up for it. This meant that anyone who singed up for this EP whether a fan or not, would be notified every single time he releases a project on this platform.
The online publicity by himself and loyal fans who are influential on the social media space, triggered many others to want to listen to this Mixtape. There have been many others who did giveaways with copies of the mixtape too.
Now, if his fellow Cameroonians have any doubt that Jovi sold over 10,000 copies of his mixtape, then what is Jovi’s real fanbase? Are we saying Jovi doesn’t have up to 20,000 loyal fans who were anxiously anticipating his mixtape and can buy it?
He’s supposed to be the one Cameroonian artist with the most loyal and established fanbase. If this be the case and considering all the anticipation and aggressive publicity that was done to promote his mixtape, why would him selling 10,000 copies be an issue?
Check out the video for Jovi’s song “Strong Enemies” currently at 86,000 views in a week of its release.
