I remember when taxis and other activities would halt and fan would be all over the streets when ever the Cameroonian football team (Indomitable Lions) had a football match. Who didn’t love Cameroonian football back in the day? But now how many do? The fans were all united behind the team and the players would perform even better whether within or without the country because they knew they had full support.
Fast forward to when there was a division on the national team especially regarding the captaincy issue back in 2010 when the camp eventually partitioned into two separate camps of former football legend Eto’o and Song, Cameroon started losing massively and the love for the game started dying whereby many fully started shifting their attention to supporting their favorite star’s camp which led to enmity and division between fans. The fans were beginning to show more love for the footballers than they were doing for football game.
Before the Anglophone crises hit Cameroonian football, the national stadium would be very vibrant and filled up whenever Cameroon had a match. Today, the stadium can hardly be filled up even during competitive matches. The political crises contributed to the drop in interest of fans but this issue of a drop in support of Cameroonian football by Cameroonians started before 2010.
