DO WE REALLY KNOW OUR HEROES? A LOOK AT PETER JERICHO
Over the weekend, The HotJem hosted a US-based African asset to the music world called Peter Jericho. Cameroon doesn’t have Peter and Paul to form a P-Square, but there exist a certain Peter Jericho with an unapologetic “Cameroonian flare” (now in his 30s). He was born in Aurora, Illinois, USA.
He lived in Canada and overtime went on to embrace music as a focus. Peter hasn’t branded himself as an R&B artist with words but with much intent, hard work and mastering of his network and art. He has worked with big American stars like Kardinal Offishall from the Caribbean, but resident in the USA. Not everyone gets that chance.
The “Influential’ crooner sings in English, French and the local pidgin English, and as surprising as it may sound, he flows in these languages especially pidgin, even more better than some home based artists. In Peter’s videos, he displays African culture and after releasing a song titled “Black Excellence” in 2015, he is sure a massive contributor to the Black live Matter Campaign.
Peter for the records has maintained an African cultural standard in his Music videos and beyond and knows home based artists to his finger tips. While on a live session when he took over TheHotJem Facebook page over the weekend, he said he would love to collaborate with home aartists of course and on his list, he had Jovi, LOCKO, Mink’s Blanche Bailly, and a host of others. He went on to speak so nicely about Stanley Enow and demanded that Stanley be given more respect for his international works.
It will suffice you to know that an artist of his caliber is not known by many and you might want to ask why such an artist isn’t known by many and then it boils down to the fact that there is a very wide gap between Diaspora and the home artists as well as fans. It was surprising how the very bilingual recording artist knows the Cameroonian music industry to his finger tips, don’t ask what we are insinuating because we all know that many wouldn’t care.
His humility and patience baffles. Not to throw shots at anyone, but if many had achieved what Peter has achieved, they would walk on others. But his relatable nature connects him with his local fans and colleagues and it tells you a lot about him.
The interaction during his session in most home media outlets has only proven that many at home don’t or didn’t know him. But as one of our goals to bridge the gap between the home and the diaspora entertainment industries, we look forward to doing our homework and bringing you more connectivity.
