Magasco who is one of the most versatile artists from West Africa, precisely Cameroon, has had a rugged career but has without a doubt been able to turn lemons into lemonade.
With real names as Tohnain Anthony Nguo, he hails from the North West Region, precisely from the Kom area. He has over the years unapologetically labeled himself as the original “Bamenda Boy” which basically means he’s a proud boy from Bamenda or a proud Bamenda boy.
When we talk about hard-working artists in Africa, he is one of those who have put in the work consistently for years and is not slowing down anytime soon. After securing a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Yaounde, he decided to dedicate his whole life to his musical career which initially did not prove to be fruitful but that did not stop him as he worked his way up the music charts with his talent, persistence and consistency.
At 32, Magasco can boast of having passed through Mumak Records and Empire Company. He remains one of the few artists who has gone via two or more record labels, parted ways amicably, and went further to create his own which without a doubt will be one of the most relevant record labels in the country.
Magasco’s discography reflects the work he has been putting over the years. After releasing several singles in the early years of his professional career, he went on to release an EP in 2015 called “Raw Gold” and yes, this was a Magasco that had not yet been exploited. Though the EP had six tracks that came after some of his popular early career tracks like: Kumba Market, Fine Boy and Marry Me, Magasco was still unboxing his potentials.
Fast forward to a few years later, he stepped up his game by becoming one of the most consistent music makers in the country. He released hits like Wule Bang Bang, Sokoto, One by One featuring Pit Baccardi, Love it ft Shan’l, Nyang Nyang featuring Lady Ponce and more.
Magasco can now boast of two albums: ‘Golden Boy’ released in 2017 and a record-breaking ‘Heart’ msde up of 30 songs released in 2019 under his label BBOY Records.
It’s incredible what this man has achieved over the years. His input in the last decade has been amazing and enviable. Though with a few awards and several nominations, #Magasco has not gotten that many more awards which he deserves. He’s no doubt among the few artists who deserve cult hero recognition.
Magasco who is a father of one (a daughter) recently got married in 2021 and like they often say, most men get married only when they feel they’re ready, and with a hectic professional musical journey, it can be assumed that he found some breeze along the line. With expertise in Hip-Hop, Afro-pop and Njang, there is absolutely no reason why you wouldn’t “pass him the lighter”.
In your opinion, do we celebrate Magasco enough?
