Hi everyone. For those of you who are all about supporting Kindey awareness or any good cause, The Iya Foundation founded by Iya Bekondo Granatella, a Kidney Transplant recipient, has a Gala called The Iya Foundation Hugs Affair on April 14th, 2018 in MD, USA. Over the years since her kidney tranplant, Iya has been a strong advocate of Kidney awareness particularly amongst the African population and Cameroon, her country of birth.
Just recently, Iya visited Cameroon to donate Dialysis machines work hundreds and thousands of dollars. If this isnt a reason to partake in her cause then I dont know what is so check it out and YES they accept donations which is what they use to help kidney patients or patients undergoing dialysis so you know your money is being spent well. The HUGS (Help Us Give Someone) Hope – Affair is a benefit dinner and gala that celebrates the people who inspire us in the fight against kidney disease.
The event brings together the renal community – patients, policy makers, and advocates for an inspirational evening that raises funds to support the programs and services of the IYA Foundation. Read a detailed message below from Iya Bekondo as to why she is passionate about this cause and her busy life in the last 6 months!

*The Reason Behind The Why*
The past six months have been the busiest I’ve ever been in my life. From planning and making a business/pleasure trip to Cameroon, returning less than 3 months later on a medical mission trip, coordinating the Green Kidney Awareness Campaign, full time job, full time student, planning HUGS Affair 2018, social obligations, LORD KNOWS I’VE HAD BARELY ANY TIME FOR MYSELF. I haven’t even unpacked from my trip to Cameroon; and it’s been about 3 weeks already. I’ve missed family gatherings and special moments with love ones. I’ve been fatigued. I am not superwoman or super anything, but *when I see the huge impact our work does to a dialysis patient back home, and in the diaspora, I become reenergized, no matter how tired or how sleep deprived I am.* I do it because of the NEED. Our community needs us. *The kidney community needs us*.
Together we can contribute towards a change in the life of a dialysis patient. Together, we can contribute towards a change in the health care system in Cameroon and Africa in general. Together, we can contribute towards improving the quality of care of our people. Together, we can invest in what will benefit us or someone close to us in the near future. It’s only a matter of time. Chronic Kidney Disease is quite prevalent in Cameroon. Majority of the people, especially after age 45 are highly at risk of developing CKD. Diabetes and Hypertension – the two leading causes of CKD, are prevalent in Cameroon.
Maintaining and sustaining a dialysis patient in Cameroon, like most areas, *is not cheap*. A lot of patients die in HOPE. They die hoping for a better, and reliable healthcare system. They die hoping they’ll get support from organizations like The Iya Project. They die waiting to be saved by a good Samaritan. A stranger who doesn’t need to know or have any connection to CKD. A stranger with a loving and compassionate heart. A stranger who can empathize and feel their pain. A stranger who can sacrifice a bit of their comfort in order to save a life. *A stranger like you.*
Ten dollars is all you need to support a dialysis session for a kidney failure patient on dialysis in Cameroon. Sacrifice your $10 lunch to save a life. To give someone another chance at life. Another day on earth. Another day with their love ones. Another day to live life.
