DR Congo Wins Penalties To Reach Inter-continental Playoff
The African playoffs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were full of excitement and drama. Four strong teams competed for a chance to move closer to the World Cup. In the end, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also called DR Congo, won the tournament after beating Nigeria in the final on penalties. Fans were on the edge of their seats as every game showed skill, courage, and determination.
The four teams in the playoffs were Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo, and Gabon. They all earned their place by finishing as the best runners-up in the CAF group stage. The tournament used single-match knockouts, meaning that one loss would eliminate a team. The winner would not go directly to the World Cup but would move on to a six-team inter-continental playoff in March 2026. Two teams from that tournament will earn a spot in the World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The semi-finals were very exciting. Nigeria played against Gabon and won 4-1 after extra time. Victor Osimhen scored two goals in extra time, and Chidera Ejuke scored one as well. This victory put Nigeria into the final.
On the other side, DR Congo faced Cameroon. The game stayed 0-0 for most of the match. Then, in stoppage time, Chancel Mbemba, the DR Congo captain, scored from a corner kick. This last-minute goal gave DR Congo a 1-0 win and a place in the final.
The final between Nigeria and DR Congo was played on 16 November 2025 at the Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. Nigeria scored first in the 3rd minute through Frank Onyeka. DR Congo equalized in the 32nd minute with a goal from Meschack Elia. After 90 minutes and extra time, the score was still 1-1, so the game went to penalties. DR Congo won the penalty shootout 4-3, beating Nigeria and earning a spot in the inter-continental playoff.
This is a huge moment for DR Congo. The country has only been to the World Cup once before, in 1974, when it was called Zaire. Now, they have another chance to reach the World Cup. The inter-continental playoff in March 2026 will be their next step, and two wins there could take them to the World Cup.
The African playoffs showed how small moments can make a big difference in soccer. One early goal, one equalizer, or a penalty can change everything. DR Congo showed strength, patience, and skill, and their dream of playing in the World Cup is still alive. Fans will now watch closely to see if they can keep their focus and succeed in the next challenge.
This tournament proved that determination and teamwork are just as important as talent. DR Congo played with both and earned a chance to make history in soccer.
