In a dramatic legal twist that’s sent ripples through the music industry, rapper Drake’s defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) has officially been dismissed by a U.S. federal judge. The case stemmed from Kendrick Lamar’s explosive diss track “Not Like Us,” which Drake claimed painted him as a “pedophile” and damaged his reputation. The court, however, ruled that the lyrics fell under artistic expression and hyperbole—common elements of rap culture—and not factual defamation.
Judge Jeannette Vargas stated that no “reasonable listener” would interpret Lamar’s barbs as literal, citing freedom of expression within hip-hop as a key factor in her ruling. UMG celebrated the decision, calling it a victory for creative freedom, while Drake’s legal team expressed disappointment and hinted at a possible appeal. For now, the verdict reinforces what many already know: in rap, lyrical warfare may be brutal, but it’s still protected speech.
