EBANGHA NJANG, AN UNSUNG TRAILBLAZER OF THE CAMEROON ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
Today, we focus attention on Cameroonian event promoter, and CEO of Sa Majesté Magazine, Ebangha Njang, whose contributions to the rise of the Cameroon entertainment thus far, is unsung.
In 2015, two friends Ebangha Njang and Eva Ndumbe, based in the diaspora and passionate about entertainment business, created a record label which they named “Kreef Entertainment”. Kreef Entertainment signed rapper Mic Monsta as their first artist, a relationship that didn’t last as long as all parties may have wanted.
While Mic Monsta went solo after a sour relationship with Kreef Entertainment, Ebangha Njang, who recently admitted that she has realized the record label business is not her thing, focused her attention on event promotion, while Eva Ndumbe returned to Cameroon to focus on artist management, event hosting and more.
Ebangha Njang’s importance in this contemporary industry goes beyond her record label aspirations. Her narration about how “The Made In Cameroon Music Festival” was birthed, shows resilience and determination.
According to event promoter, when Mr. Leo, came to United States for the first time, she accompanied him to New York City, where popular Nigerian artists all highlighted and dominated the “One Africa Festival”. Herein, Mr.Leo and Casper Nyovest were the only non-Nigerians. This gave her the drive to think about doing something similar strictly for Cameroonians and when she contacted artists like Stanley Enow, Magasco, Mr. Leo and others, they were positive about it and that’s partly how the arm of Cameroonian cultural promotion in the diaspora was born.
Njang did admit that the turn up of the first event and the collaboration of the artists and diaspora population that time was massive and an endorsement to what she hopes will be an annual festival for Cameroonians in the United States.
While many might attribute Ebangha Njang to Magasco’s fame because of their romantic affair, she is not or should not be considered a shadow of Magasco’s fame as many make it seem. She’s a woman who has built her own reputation, standards and relevance in her own way in the industry over the last few years. She is selfless, hardworking and stands up for other women.
The event promoter has been standing up against men getting heavier cheques than women even if women put in more work in most scenarios than men. To give a woman’s place in the entertainment industry, she decided to create Sa Majesté Magazine, a magazine focused on promoting women and giving them their flowers while connecting them to more opportunities.
Ebangha Njang is one of the few entrepreneurs, to admit that most record labels are very unscrupulous and do exploit young Cameroonian talents. According to her, many artists are still young, ambitious, talented, but ignorant and impatient. As such, record labels take advantage of this aspect to outsmart them. As such, she recommends entertainment lawyers for artists.
As we gear towards the International Day of the woman amid the unending social media turmoil, it’s imperative to single out positive and ambitious women still standing tall and making a positive impact.
