THJ: You’re latest song that we listened to is called “You don’t know me” (#Unonome) and you sing it in Pidgin English… why Pidgin and not English as English might attract and appeal a wider audience of listeners?
BeingNgang: Good question, I can speak really good English, I think. And a huge part of my audience and network probably don’t understand Pidgin. However, the music I make is something that just comes to me. I don’t make it to attract an audience. If anything I make music to tell my story, inspire or simply just connect with people. I make music that people like me can relate to.
THJ: Please tell us about “You don’t know me” and what motivated you to sing it? Did you write the song? Also tell us about the video. We see that you directed the video and it was done in Texas and Minnesota (with the snow scenes) am I correct?
BeingNgang: About #unonome, I made it in my bedroom, instrumental and lyrics. Recorded it and had Sangtum mix it in Cameroon. I recorded the video on my birthday and edited it in about three hours. I made the song for the unconventional, the free thinkers, I made it for those of us who would not let everyone else put us in a box.
It is really a song for hustlers, for entrepreneurs, for the underprivileged. It is a song for those of us who won’t stop for nothing; those of us who have been through thick and thin to finally attain some level of comfort and stability. It is a feel good song to celebrate how far we have come. I implore everyone to make it their 2019 “Can’t stop me” Anthem.
BeingNgang: About Texas, the video wasn’t planned or scripted. I visited Texas for the holiday season and seized the opportunity to shoot part of it down. The rest of the video was shot on my birthday and the day after. Just normal life stuff. And yeah the dancing, It crazy , I don’t know how I came up with that. I think if anyone tries, they would get some pretty good memes from that video.
THJ: I have listened to two of your songs; “You don’t know me” and “Love your neighbor, Trust God” the latter which is sang in English while former is sang in Pidgin English. Should we expect your future songs to be in Pidgin and English only or will you add some French to it?
BeingNgang: Probably no French for me. Not that I can’t speak it. I was a senior prefect at a bilingual school at one point in time. It’s just that my songs are about my life, and I grew up mostly in Bamenda. My story is better told in Pidgin.
THJ: What inspired you sing “Love your neighbor, Trust God”? It seems like a very random song?
BeingNgang: Love your neighbor is a spoken word piece and really just talks about my faith in God and his work in my life. He has brought me a long way.
