Cameroonian rapper Askia purportedly under Lionz Music, a record label owned by singer Mr. Leo, revealed that she has been independent since last year, leaving fans in a state of pandemonium.
In her interview with Hall of Fame TV show host Darling Lyonga, Askia disclosed that despite dedicating over 13 years to her music career, she had yet to make money from her craft. This revelation marked a turning point for the rapper, who subsequently joined forces with former label mate Mr. Leo. Following their collaboration on Askia’s track “Ngarma,” the two artists formed a partnership, culminating in Askia’s official signing with Mr. Leo’s record label.
Several months later, fans began to question why Askia hadn’t released any new music. As speculation grew, a mysterious Facebook post from Askia piqued fans’ curiosity, leading them to suspect tensions between her and the record label, despite Askia not directly acknowledging any such issues.
“The most selfish person I’ve ever met. You failed my trust and failed me entirely. Selfish and stingy. Very very stingy” – Askia’s post read.
As fans persist in unraveling the events that transpired, Askia has been gradually revealing some details on her page. One of her startling revelations is that contrary to popular belief, fans have been attributing credit for her individual efforts to Mr. Leo.
“Na so una be cam last time see a girl struggling to brand herself and hold her image down after I had been on the bench for almost 4 months no action. Una cam say ehooo mr Leo don change askia hehoooo , lion music di do askia well ehoo this ehoooo that . My podcast LET IT ALL OUT is almost ready. I hope y’all will open your ears well cuz mami Bakala no di tok lie…”
In her upcoming podcast titled “LET IT ALL OUT,” Askia pledges to reveal all the details. At this juncture, it’s apparent that Askia is no longer affiliated with any record label, or if she is, the label hasn’t been actively supporting her career as she has been primarily responsible for its sustenance.
It’s worth mentioning that Askia is widely regarded as one of the most talented female rap artists in Africa. She recently clinched an African Magazine Music Award (AFRIMMA) in Dallas, TX in 2023, a testament to her remarkable talent.
When Mr. Leo signed Askia, various social media commentators expressed their reservations. Many doubted the wisdom of the decision, and despite this, they offered the following comments:
