FECAFOOT Fires Marc Brys And Starts A New Era With David Pagou
The situation between Marc Brys and the Cameroon Football Federation grew worse over many months until it reached a point where the federation decided to remove him from his position. FECAFOOT explained in a long and detailed press release that Brys had shown a repeated pattern of behavior that created tension, confusion, and instability around the national team. They said these issues started soon after his appointment on May 8, 2024 and kept getting worse even after warnings from the federation president. The federation described his actions as disrespectful and risky and said they had a direct effect on the performance and public image of the Indomitable Lions.
According to FECAFOOT, Brys refused to attend some important work sessions that the federation had scheduled. These meetings are seen as necessary for planning and cooperation, so his absence made coordination difficult. FECAFOOT also accused him of publishing player lists and organizing press conferences without permission. This was seen as a violation of the internal procedures that every coach is expected to respect. The federation added that he did not follow the marketing rules that protect agreements with sponsors. This created fear that some of the partnerships could be damaged.
They further explained that Brys submitted preselected lists of players without mentioning the clubs they played for. This is a basic requirement and failing to include it made the work of the technical and administrative departments harder. FECAFOOT said he refused to share training programs and did not provide match reports after international games. These reports help the federation evaluate progress and challenges. The federation noted that he did not respect deadlines for providing final squad lists for official matches. They also accused him of ignoring the staff that had been officially put in place by the Executive Committee and instead working with people who had no official connection to the federation.
The press release also mentioned that Brys failed to answer some of the summons for team gatherings. FECAFOOT said he used deceit to avoid his responsibilities, especially the press conferences meant for publishing squad lists. They also accused him of influencing players in ways that encouraged defiance toward the federation. According to them, all these repeated actions weakened the team spirit and reduced its ability to perform well in important matches. FECAFOOT believes this climate of confusion contributed to the national team failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup that will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This difficult working environment created a strong desire within the federation to rebuild the team with new discipline and new direction. That is where the issue of not calling previous stars like Vincent Aboubakar and Andre Onana becomes important. When David Pagou was appointed as the new coach, he took over a national team that had been divided for many months. FECAFOOT wanted a new beginning and a strong message of discipline. Aboubakar and Onana are both big names and respected leaders, but the new leadership decided that the team needed fresh energy. Reports indicated that the new coach wanted players who were fully focused on the new project and ready to adapt to a new environment without any of the conflicts that had surrounded the team in recent months.
Andre Onana has had a long and complicated relationship with the national team. Over the years he has had moments of disagreement with previous coaching teams, and his return has not always been smooth. In a moment when FECAFOOT wants total stability, they may have felt that leaving him out would make the rebuilding process calmer. Vincent Aboubakar has also been a central figure for many years, but the new leadership seems to be focusing on younger talents. The aim is to build a team that will grow together and avoid the tensions that have affected the national team in the past.
The decision to not call these two stars is therefore connected to the entire crisis that led to the removal of Marc Brys. The federation believes that the team needs a fresh start with new discipline and unity. They want a group that is not affected by past conflicts, past misunderstandings, or the divisions seen during Brys’s time. The new coach appears to be choosing players who fit the new direction and who can start a new chapter for the national team. This choice may feel surprising to many fans who admire Aboubakar and Onana, but for FECAFOOT it is part of a bigger plan to rebuild confidence and restore the strong reputation of the Indomitable Lions.
