Over the last few years, the music industry has a seen a rise in artist-owned record labels. Female singers are jumping into the male dominated record label ownership arena and have been adding the title of “CEO of X, Y and Z record label”, to their name.
This is happening as more and more female singers and musicians are taking control of their music career and future, even if they are the sole artist in their record label. Here are five artists from Cameroon who now own record labels.
1. Blanche Bailly
Blanche Bailly’s HitZone, has achieved a series of milestones with Blanche as the only artist thus far. The company is registered and operating legally across the globe. We are yet to see the label sign an artist besides Blanche, but it is confirmed to have foreign partners, so the label is not going anywhere, any time soon.
2. Muriel Blanche
As one of the the most successful female entrepreneurs and showbiz actors, Muriel Blanche also ventured into the music business, from being an artist herself, to creating and signing herself and one other artist called JOY to NAJAL Entertainment.
3. Mimie
After spending a couple of years with Empire Company (owned by Pitt Barcardi), Mimie is gradually following the footsteps of her friend, Muriel Blanche, as both of them seem to be leaving no stone unturned. Just a few months after going independent, Mimie World Records was birthed and Mimie is the only artist signed to the label at the moment.
4. Kameni
Kameni, who also spent some time at Lionn Productions under the mentorship of Mr. Leo, went solo a couple of years ago. She just unveiled the official logos and a press release, announce the creation of her own record label called Rude Gyal Nation, which of course, has Kameni as the only artist, until we get news of any other being signed to her label.
5. Reniss
Reniss, after several years of being under the auspices of NewBell Music, joins the bandwagon of female go-getters. Yesterday, she also announced the creation of her own record label, called RINGA RECS which she calls “an extension to NewBell Music”.
The projects to be executed by many of these newly created record labels, are still to be uncovered, and whether or not all of them are legally operating, are details we cannot fully provide right now, but it is interesting to also see more women wanting to change the narrative in our music industry!
