FLASHBACK: A RIVALRY BEYOND CELEBRATION
In 1978, something big happened in football history – Johan Cruyff’s farewell match. It was supposed to be a fun game between his team, Ajax, and the famous Bayern Munich. But it turned into an intense battle.
Bayern Munich really wanted to win because they were still upset about losing to Ajax in 1973. Some people even said the media had hyped up Cruyff’s goodbye match, making Bayern even more determined to win.
The match ended up feeling like a Champions League final for Bayern. They played amazingly and won 8-0. Muller and Rummenigge scored three goals each, while Breitner scored two, making the scoreboard light up.
But there was some controversy. The referee didn’t count a few of Bayern’s goals on purpose to make the score less embarrassing for Cruyff. He later admitted he did it because he didn’t want Cruyff to feel bad.
Luckily, this match wasn’t the end of Cruyff’s career. He came out of retirement a year later and continued playing until 1984. Even though the Bayern match was a big deal, Cruyff had many more memorable moments in football before retiring for good.
