We highlight gospel artists from across Africa who are making music that touches hearts and encourages worship. This time, we’re shining a light on two amazing women of faith with powerful and refreshing sounds: HLE from South Africa and Janet Manyowa from Zimbabwe.
1. HLE – South Africa
If you’re into gospel music that feels as modern as it is meaningful, HLE (Hlengiwe Ntombela) should absolutely be on your radar. Known for her commanding voice, fashion-forward style, and worship-centered lyrics, HLE is helping redefine what South African gospel can sound and look like.
Before going solo, she was a standout member of the iconic group Joyous Celebration, where her voice became a fan favorite. Since then, she’s launched a thriving solo career and built a strong following among younger audiences across southern Africa.
Her 2020 debut album, “Your Kingdom on Earth”, was a statement of intent, bold, musically rich, and filled with passion. One of the standout tracks from her recent work is “You’re the Worthy One” a worship anthem that beautifully balances simplicity and vocal brilliance. It’s a track you’ll want on your Sunday morning playlist or late-night prayer session.
HLE is also known for her uplifting social media presence and her ability to merge gospel with creativity, fashion, and digital culture, a true modern minister for this generation. Watch “You’re the Worthy One”:
2. Janet Manyowa – Zimbabwe
When you talk about leading voices in Zimbabwean gospel, Janet Manyowa is a name that comes up again and again and for good reason. She’s more than just a singer; she’s a worship leader, songwriter, businesswoman, and television personality who has carved out a space for gospel excellence in Zimbabwe and beyond.
Janet blends modern gospel sounds with deep-rooted Shona spirituality, creating music that feels both culturally grounded and globally accessible. Her vocals are smooth, her messages are clear, and her musical arrangements are world-class.
One must-listen track is “Nyasha NeNgoni” which translates to “Grace and Mercy.” The song is both a testimony and a prayer, delivered with warmth and sincerity. It captures her ability to touch hearts through music, regardless of whether you speak Shona or not.
Aside from her music, Janet is a trailblazer. She’s received multiple national awards, including Best Female Artist at the Zimbabwe Music Awards, and continues to mentor younger artists through platforms like her Janet Manyowa Music Academy. Watch “Nyasha NeNgoni”:
Both HLE and Janet Manyowa represent a new generation of African gospel music. They’re not only making music for Sunday morning; they’re shaping culture, embracing digital platforms, and reaching young believers where they are.
If you’re looking for worship music that speaks your language, brings a fresh sound, or helps you reconnect with your faith, these two women are definitely worth following.
Stay tuned each week as we continue discovering the voices carrying the gospel across Africa.
