Zinnia is a Nigerian-based singer or Cameroonian descent, who can be added to the list of other artists from Cameroon who have been kept in the sidelines by most Cameroonian fans.
In 2019, Zinnia released the video of her viral Afro pop love song Overload which went on to put her in the record books as one of the most popular songs ever to be played in heavu rotation in the island of Fiji. Cameroonians can take very little credit for the songs success which led to Zinnia’s popularity. Why? It’s simple. Overload was never a well received song in Cameroon as it was in the Fijis and Mauritania.
As the saying goes, a prophet is never received in their hometown, and sadly, such was the case with Zinnia.
In a live session with The HotJem, when asked if she felt unappreciated by her people from Cameroon, ZINNIA confirmed that the reception by her home fans was Shocking. She confirmed that the home fans gave her a cold shoulder to lean on when needed them most, but thank goodness, the Fiji fans would Idolise her and set her above the level of just a basic artist.
When Cameroonian fans saw that Zinnia’s song Overload was already a hit else where, only then did they try to tag along and jump on the bandwagon, but as the hype around overload had slowly died down, the same Cameroonians again went back into their shells.
To confirm the unsupportive behavior from her fellow Cameroonians, followed the hype of her hit song Overload, when Zinnia released an EP titled Good Times, once again, the reception by Cameroonians was obviously still cold.
With legendary artists like Richard Bona turning their backs on their country of birth that they have represented all through due to lack of appreciation and respect of their art, Cameroonians might need to relook and give more relevance to their artists in foreign lands, so that they can avoid unnecessary drama in the long run.
Now that Zinnia has released another song titled I Remember, Cameroonians have another shot at supporting her music and not ignoring her like they did before.
