Coming to America 1988
The first Coming to America was released in 1988. It is a comedy film directed by John Landis and stars Eddie Murphy as Prince Akeem Joffer. Prince Akeem is the crown prince of the fictional African nation of Zamunda. He is intelligent kind and tired of living a life where everything is done for him including being forced into an arranged marriage. On his twenty first birthday Akeem travels to New York City with his best friend and servant Semmi played by Arsenio Hall. He wants to find a woman who will love him for who he is not for his title or money.
The movie follows Akeem as he hides his royal identity and lives like an ordinary person in the neighborhood of Queens. There he meets Lisa McDowell a smart and beautiful young woman and falls in love with her. Akeem works at a fast food restaurant to stay close to her and eventually wins her heart by showing his true character.
The film was groundbreaking at the time of its release. It showed African royalty in a positive way something that was rare in Hollywood movies. The fictional kingdom of Zamunda was rich elegant and full of proud traditions. This helped change the way Africa was seen in popular media. Instead of focusing on poverty or war the film focused on wealth family and culture.
The movie was also unique because Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall played several characters each. This showed their talent and brought more humor to the story. The film included themes of love identity and staying true to oneself. These ideas are still important today and have helped the movie remain a classic over the years.
Coming to America became a cultural icon. It was one of the few big films with a mostly Black cast that was both a commercial and critical success. The film’s humor fashion and memorable lines became part of pop culture. It also helped increase respect for African culture in the United States and beyond.
Many people from the African diaspora saw themselves in the characters. The movie celebrated Black excellence through its royal characters and successful families. It made a strong statement about Black love culture and identity.
Coming 2 America 2021
More than thirty years after the first movie a sequel was released. Coming 2 America came out in 2021 and was directed by Craig Brewer. In this film Prince Akeem is now King Akeem of Zamunda. He lives happily with Queen Lisa and their three daughters. However a new problem arises when Akeem learns he has a son in America named Lavelle. This surprises everyone since it was not mentioned in the first film.
Akeem travels back to Queens to find Lavelle and bring him to Zamunda. He wants Lavelle to become the next king because Zamunda law says only a man can rule. The story shows Lavelle learning about his roots and struggling to fit into royal life. In the end traditions are questioned and changed allowing one of Akeem’s daughters to become the heir.
The second movie continues the themes of the first film while also adding new ideas. It focuses on gender equality tradition and family. While the film brought back many of the original characters it also introduced new ones including Black actors from both Africa and America.
The movie once again highlighted African culture through clothing music and royal customs. Zamunda was shown as a powerful nation with a mix of modern and traditional values. The sequel reminded audiences of the importance of heritage but also showed that culture can grow and improve.
Even though the sequel did not receive as much praise as the first film it was still important. It showed that Black stories continue to matter and deserve big platforms. The movie premiered on a major streaming service and reached a global audience. Many fans were happy to see familiar characters and felt proud to see African culture represented in such a grand way.
