The ongoing saga between Mercy Chinwo and Eezee Tee, the founder of Eezee Conceptz Ltd, a prominent Nigerian gospel record label that signed Mercy in 2017, continues to unfold. According to recent revelations by the CEO, he was forcibly detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Nigeria due to the actions of one of his artists, Mercy Chinwo, and her team.
Although the record label and the artist parted ways years ago, the artist is now demanding that the label hand over her music catalog, which was produced under a 50/50 agreement as part of a 360⁰ deal.
Eezee Tee explains that the record label sent an email to the artist, requesting a meeting to resolve their royalty disputes—an email that was reportedly ignored by the artist.
Eezee Tee claims that the artist, along with the EFCC, “forcefully” made him transfer a sum of $274,000 to Chinwo after luring him to Ilorin, Nigeria, where they allegedly coerced him into writing a statement that favored the artist.
Furthermore, Eezee Tee has stated that after forcing him to make the payment, they demanded that he hand over the artist’s catalog to her—something he refused to comply with.
“What do you expect from someone who can make her voice sound like that of a child? She’s a very good actor and manipulator,” said Eezee Tee, referring to Mercy Chinwo.
He also mentioned that he was detained for nine days and was only released after agreeing to illegally pay the $274,000.
“When I got to the EFCC, I was told not to speak my truth—that all they dealt with were figures. I responded that we can’t talk about money without addressing what gave rise to it. We’re talking about a contract in which money was invested in this artist, and that money generated returns,” Eezee Tee added.
