IS DAPHNE’S RETURN TO MUSIC WORTH THE WAIT?
Daphné Njie, known mononymously as Daphne, doesn’t need any introduction in the music industry. Despite her hiatus, the multi-talented and multi-award winning artist, was always in the conversations, usually with fans always desiring to know when she’d make a come-back.
On October 4th, 2024, Daphné, enthusiastically referred to as the “Queen” by her many fans, finally made her way back into the music scene with a sizzling tune, titled “Happy” featuring Nigerian singer Teni.
The official video, directed by King Achiri, currently stands at 1,600 views on Daphne’s YouTube channel after three hours of its release and at the time this write-up was made. The video portrays Daphne’s journey from getting married, to getting pregnant, and returning to the music industry, level-headed, despite all the troubles with her label which could have weighed on her and slowed her musical career down. It’s worth mentioning that the video doesn’t have any obscene scenes and is a video for every age group.
The views for the video might have been a lot more if Daphne was still under her former label (Steven’s Music Entertainment) which currently has 525,000 subscribers to their YouTube channel. It’s obvious, that the singer has started a new journey in her musical career, that will come with its own roadblocks and obstacles, and her continuous rise in the music industry as an independent artist will not be as easy as fans expect it to be. “Happy” might not be one of the biggest hits of the year, but it is a fun and amazing tune to get her back into the swing of things and to jumpstart her solo career.
“Happy”, produced by Ntui Rodrique Egbe, and mixed and mastered by K Master K Mix, is a song for people who have refused to let the ups and downs of life weigh them down. Hence, they choose happiness above all things.
The song is co-written by Asaba and Teni who are undoubtedly some of the best female singers and writers, in the continent. The melody and refrain, are easy and smooth. Teni didn’t need to do any better with her verse as she has always had her unique flare. You weren’t expecting another Teni or Daphné, were you?
Many would argue, that Daphne could have gone for a more trending artist other than Teni, but seeing Daphne make her come-back with an international artist, only sends a subtle message that we might just be seeing the singer immerse herself more with international collaborations, going forward.
The only question running through my mind now is how frequently she’s going to be releasing new music. A little bit of consistency and commitment on her part moving forward, could reinstate her at the pinnacle, even if that’s not her objective right now.
REMARK: Daphne is still very much loved by her fans from social media reactions she’s been getting following her latest release. One thing we must make peace with, is that her solo journey won’t be a walk in the park, but she now has freedom to do as she pleases, which is the more reason why can hopefully trust her come-back.
