In June 2020, Nigerian DJ Obi confessed via a tweet on Twitter that Nigerian DJ’s do not play Cameroonian music because it is not their culture to do. He furthered advised that if the Cameroonian music industry has to grow, they need to promote and encourage their own artists.
To many invested in the Cameroonian music industry, his advise sounds like a broken record, however, in all fairness, this is the same advise many are hearing from Nigerians. Could this be the secret to Nigerian artists success? Do Nigeria really only promote their own musicians?
In light of Naira Marley’s concert getting canceled in Cameroon maybe due the implementation of not supporting foreign artists in Cameroon, DJ Obi’s tweet is a good reminder that heated topic surrounding “supporting your own” did not start today.
