Omah Lay is one of the brightest stars in Nigerian music today. His real name is Stanley Omah Didia. He was born on May 19, 1997, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He grew up in a humble environment in the Marine Base area of Port Harcourt. Omah Lay comes from a family with a deep love for music. In fact, his grandfather was a well-known percussionist for the famous Nigerian highlife singer Celestine Ukwu. So, you could say that music was always in his blood.
Growing up, Omah Lay faced many challenges. Life in Port Harcourt was not always easy, and like many young Nigerians, he had to find a way to build his dreams despite the odds. In his early years, he loved listening to artists like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Drake. These artists inspired him and shaped his music style. He started as a music producer before he became a singer. In those days, Omah Lay worked behind the scenes, producing beats for other artists. He spent a lot of time in studios learning about sound, rhythm, and melody. But soon, he realized that he had a voice and a story of his own to share.
In 2019, Omah Lay decided to focus on singing and writing his own songs. His breakout came in early 2020 with the release of his debut single “Bad Influence.” The song was a hit and quickly went viral on social media and music streaming platforms. People loved the smooth rhythm, catchy melody, and honest lyrics. “Bad Influence” became an anthem for young Nigerians, and it put Omah Lay on the map.
After this success, he released his first extended play (EP) titled “Get Layd” in May 2020. This EP included songs like “Lo Lo,” “You,” and “Damn.” The project was an instant success and showed Omah Lay’s talent and unique style. His sound mixed Afrobeats with soulful melodies and modern R&B. It was fresh, emotional, and relatable. With this EP, Omah Lay became one of the fastest-rising new artists in Nigeria. His music appealed to both Nigerian audiences and international listeners.
As his fame grew, Omah Lay began working with some of the biggest names in the industry. In 2021, he collaborated with American singer Justin Bieber on the song “Attention.” This was a big milestone in his career because it brought him more attention outside of Africa. The song did very well and showed that Omah Lay was ready to step onto the global stage. His second EP, “What Have We Done,” also showed his growth as an artist. Tracks like “Godly” became massive hits, earning millions of streams on platforms like Spotify and YouTube.
But behind the success, Omah Lay has also been very open about his personal struggles. He has spoken publicly about his battles with depression, loneliness, and even drug use. In several interviews, Omah Lay admitted that the sudden fame and pressure of the music industry affected his mental health. He also talked about smoking and using marijuana to cope with stress and emotions. However, he has been honest with his fans about these struggles, which has made many people respect him even more. His music often reflects these personal battles, with deep lyrics about pain, love, and healing.
In 2022, Omah Lay released his first full-length album titled “Boy Alone.” The album was highly praised and showed his maturity both as a person and as an artist. Songs like “Understand,” “Woman,” and “Bend You” connected with fans across the world. The album’s title reflected his personal experiences of isolation and growth.
Today, Omah Lay is seen as one of the leading voices in the new wave of Afrobeats. He has performed on major stages, toured internationally, and won several awards. But he remains grounded and focused on improving his craft. His story is an example of how passion, hard work, and honesty can turn dreams into reality. From a young boy in Port Harcourt to an international star, Omah Lay continues to redefine Afrobeats and inspire millions of fans across the world.
