Actress Omotola Jalade has reproached American film directors and producers for casting
Americans as Africans in their movies. According to the Nollywood star, it does not make sense to force Americans who barely sound like Africans or know what Africa looks like to star or act in positions that Africans should be occupying.
While many may agree or disagree with her point of view, one thing for sure is that some of the most successful movies that were centered around Africa or African character had Americans playing African roles. Here are some movies where American actors played a leading role to depict African character:
- The Woman King a movie about the Agojie (an all female unit of warriors) who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800. Dahomey is located in what is today South Benin. Viola Davis played the leading role of the leader of the warriors.
- Black Panther/Wakanda Forever movies
- The Last King of Scotland based on the life of former Ugandan president and dictator, Eddie Amin, played by Forest Whitaker.
- Cry Freedom which focuses the life of South African activist Steven Biko played by Denzel Washington.
- Coming to America played by Eddie Murphy who played the part of an African prince.
