Portugal has been crowned the 2025 UEFA Nations League champions after a breathtaking final against Spain that ended in a penalty shootout. The match took place at the Allianz Arena in Munich on June 8, 2025, and delivered a memorable night of football for fans around the world. After ninety minutes and extra time, the score was locked at 2–2. The title was decided by penalties, where Portugal held their nerves and converted all five of their spot-kicks, defeating Spain 5–3 in the shootout.
The match itself was a rollercoaster of emotions. Spain took the lead twice with goals from Zubimendi and Oyarzabal, showing great attacking play. But Portugal showed resilience and refused to back down. One of the standout moments came from Cristiano Ronaldo, who once again showed why he is considered one of the greatest players of all time. At 40 years old, Ronaldo scored a powerful equaliser to make it 2–2, bringing his international tally to an incredible 138 goals. The goal did not just tie the match, it reignited Portugal’s spirit and pushed them towards the finish line. After the game, Ronaldo was seen in tears, describing the moment as “tears of duty done and a lot of joy.” Winning this trophy meant a lot to him, as it is now his third international title with Portugal, putting him on the same level as Lionel Messi in terms of international trophies.
The penalty shootout was full of tension, but Portugal remained calm. Diogo Costa saved Álvaro Morata’s penalty, which turned out to be the only miss. Rúben Neves then scored the final and decisive penalty to secure the win. Portugal became the first team in history to win the Nations League twice, and the celebrations were massive.
One of the heroes of the night was Nuno Mendes. The young left-back had the task of marking Spain’s rising star, Lamine Yamal. Mendes completely shut down Yamal throughout the match, just as he has done to many top right-wingers this season. From Mohamed Salah in the Champions League to Bukayo Saka in European competitions, Mendes has been a nightmare for anyone attacking from the right. His performance against Spain was dominant, both defensively and offensively, and he was rightly awarded the Player of the Tournament.
This Nations League title adds to what has already been an incredible season for several Portuguese players, especially those playing for Paris Saint-Germain. Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, Gonçalo Ramos, and João Neves have all enjoyed major success this season. So far, they have won five trophies: Ligue 1, the French Cup, the French Super Cup, the UEFA Champions League, and now the UEFA Nations League. They still have the chance to win two more titles before the year ends. PSG will compete in the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. If they manage to win both, these Portuguese stars could end the season with a total of seven trophies. That would place them in a very rare category in football history, joining legends like Dani Alves who once achieved the same feat.
This Nations League victory will be remembered not just for the title, but for the performances that led to it. Portugal played with heart, experience, and talent. Ronaldo’s goal continues to bring him closer to the unbelievable milestone of 1000 career goals. Nuno Mendes has proven he is one of the best left-backs in the world right now. And the PSG-Portuguese core is building a legacy that could be talked about for generations.
Portugal’s night in Munich was more than a football victory. It was a statement. A message that they are a team full of warriors, legends, and rising stars, all pushing the limits of what is possible in a single season.
