As the Presidential Elections are getting closer to voting day for Cameroonians to vote for their next President on October 7th, 2018, many of the candidates are doing everything in their power to grasp the attention of their citizen both in Cameroon and in the diaspora.
On what seems to be H.E. President Paul Biya’s newly created ‘Presidential Campaign Twitter page’ called “Paul Biya 2018“, he posted a flyer/cover art with the caption both in English saying “Free concert offered by H.E. Paul BIYA, Yaounde Sports Compex, Saturday, 6 October 2018” and another one in French saying “Concert gratuit offert par S.E. Paul BIYA, Palais Polyvalent des Sports de Yaoundé, Samedi, 06 octobre 2018.”
A concert with many of Cameroon’s popular musicians, entertainers, comedians will be taking place a day before the elections courtesy of Paul Biya’s campaign. Is this an attempt to target and attract more youths to vote? Youths make up majority of the population of Cameroon and there has been a lot of negative feedback on Facebook as people have spotted some “urban” artists who they consider as black legs for taking part in this event instead of boycotting it.
The Founder of a popular music blog took to Facebook and said “Wow wow ! They really think we are stupid! For the bikutsi artists it’s no news, I’m even more disappointed by the urban artists that are on there! But oh well, to each their own.”
Whatever the case, we know that there is motive and an agenda behind this show and it’s all about the politics. As for the artists, if they got paid to do this, then they might just be doing what they do… entertaining with no strings attached.
