Samuel Eto’o Re-elected As FECAFOOT President With Huge Majority
Samuel Eto’o has been re-elected as the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) for another four years and the result shows how strong his influence remains inside the structure. The election took place at the CAF Centre of Excellence in Mbankomo where 87 delegates were invited to vote. Eto’o received 85 votes and only 2 ballots were invalid which means he secured more than 97 percent of the support inside the assembly. This result is one of the clearest victories in the history of FECAFOOT elections and it shows that most members still trust him to guide the future of soccer in the country.
This re-election did not come without tension. Earlier in the year the Ministry of Sports had suspended the electoral process. The ministry said FECAFOOT had launched the elections without following all administrative procedures. That decision created confusion and even raised doubts about whether the vote would take place. A court decision later dismissed the challenge and ruled that the general assembly could go forward legally. This judgement cleared the final obstacle and allowed the delegates to elect the next president.
Samuel Eto’o enters his new mandate with the advantage of experience. His first term was marked by different reforms inside Cameroonian soccer. Under his leadership the federation worked on rebuilding local leagues which have struggled with organisation and financing. FECAFOOT also updated its statutes so that presidents and executive members can serve up to three mandates. He pushed for more transparency inside the institution and tried to modernise how competitions are run. All these steps were meant to make Cameroonian soccer more competitive and more respected across Africa.
His influence is no longer limited to the national level. In early 2025 he gained a position inside the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football. This gave him the opportunity to represent Cameroon at continental level and strengthen the country’s presence in African soccer politics. Even though he rejected the position of vice president, his presence inside the committee still gives him more weight and more access to decision making.
Many Cameroonians hope his second mandate will focus on improving the quality of local leagues which have suffered from financial gaps, poor stadium conditions and inconsistent calendars. Fans want better organisation, stronger youth development programs and more investment in training centers. They also hope the national teams will benefit from better preparation and more stability. Eto’o brings strong international experience from his playing career and many people expect him to use that background to raise the level of Cameroonian soccer.
At the same time critics want more accountability. Some believe FECAFOOT still lacks financial clarity and needs stronger internal control. Others say too much energy has been spent on political battles instead of building structures that help young players and local clubs. These concerns remain important as Eto’o enters a new term with even more power. The trust he received through 85 votes gives him a big responsibility to prove that the faith placed in him is deserved.
Samuel Eto’o’s re election confirms his status as one of the most influential figures in the history of Cameroonian soccer. His charisma, his career achievements and his leadership style continue to shape how the country’s football community sees the future. The next four years will show whether he can turn this strong mandate into real progress for the sport. The expectations are high and the hope is that Cameroonian soccer will grow stronger and more organised under his continued leadership.
