American tennis professional, Serena Williams has grabbed every single attention that there used to be grabbed after dropping her racket for good following her shocking exit from the US Open. There will surely be no surprises if the name “Serena” was synonymous to “tennis” however, it isn’t.
If there’s a female name that comes to everyone when this sport is concerned, it is definitely hers. After giving up all for this game and winning all that there was to be won therein, she has now put an end to her mesmerizing career.
Just like she triumphantly entered the game with that historic 1999 win over her older sister Venus Williams who describes Serena as, “The G.O.AT.” (Greatest Of All Time) Serena went on to be ranked world No.1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks, and finished as the year-end No.1 five times
Before now, it was hard for Serena to admit that she had retire from tennis.
“I’ve been reluctant to admit that I have to move on from playing tennis. It’s like a taboo topic. It comes up, and I start to cry. I think the only person I’ve really gone there with is my therapist” Serena said while addressing retirement talks some months back.
It’s clear that it wasn’t what she wanted but it’s obvious a day like that would come when she’d hit the nail and yesterday was that day.
“It’s been the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever been on in my life,” Williams said, tears streaming down her cheeks shortly after one final shot landed in the net. “I’m so grateful to every single person that’s ever said, ‘Go, Serena!’ in their life.”
After being knocked out at the Arthur Ashe stadium in the third round of the US Open, Serena would appreciate her fans and that would be the 23 time Grand slam winner’s exit from the game. She will turn 41 in the days ahead, but what a career she has had.
