February 8, 2021, marked exactly three years since Ghanaian dancehall sensational Ebony Reigns passed on. Though we have no choice to accept that she’s no more, just like some other African young talents who left sooner expected, it is difficult to ignore how great and determined she was ready to change how Africans dancehall saw Dancehall.
Ebony whose real name was Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, was the youngest child in her family and certainly the most daring. After coming to the Ghanaian music scene in 2015, Ebony needed just three years to become a household name setting and matching every unprecedented record in the music industry.
On the streets, she was certainly not admired by many for her type of dressing. She however didn’t care about what anyone thought about her because according to her,
“Dancehall is dancehall, you can’t be a dancehall artist and be doing any good-girl thing.” – she told Hitz FM.
However, being a bad girl didn’t make her a bad artist. Ebony’s rich discography had a series of hits like “Kupe, Maame, Hustle, Poison ” etc. Since she died in an accident with her entire team on her way back from visiting her mom on February 8, 2018, there is still very few female singers in Ghana who have impressed in this genre, especially now that almost everyone is turning to afrobeat.
After setting the pace and leaving sooner than expected, Ebony may be gone but not forgotten. She might not have stayed for long but she didn’t do less either.
