One name that will never be forgotten in the world of boxing for both the good and the bad is former undisputed World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Mike Tyson, who quickly went from zero to hero and back to zero again in less than no time in his career
The New York Times reported that Tyson had earned close to $400 million in his career before eventually losing everything in a flash. He lost his fortune after he had been accused of rape. In 1992, the boxer went to jail and was released in 1995.
Towards the end of Tyson’s boxing career, relations between he and his promoter Don King began to decline as he accused the King of stealing millions of dollars he had earned from boxing and he considered King exploitative and greedy. In 1998, Tyson sued his promoter for $100 million.
Tyson’s life eventually took a turn for the worse as he blew most of his career earnings and lost this money due to a series of poor financial decisions which led to him filing for bankruptcy in 2003. Mind you, Forbes had estimated Tyson’s career earnings to be $685 million. Also, in 2003, he split up with his second wife, Monica Turner.
Tyson has had two failed marriages. In 2009, he remarried for the third time to Lakiha Spicer two weeks after the death of his 4-year old daughter, Exodus, and the couple have been together ever since. They have two children together.
It’s miraculous, how the former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion bounced back despite all the hurdles he faced. Now the former boxes does cameos, has a podcast show “Hotboxin with Mike Tyson” and has other business ventures.
The New York Times estimates his net-worth to be $10 million in 2023. We know this is a tiny fraction of what he once earned during his heyday but as the saying goes,
The downfall of a man is not the end if his life.
Such is the case of Mike Tyson whose life should be a lesson to the younger generation, specially the new breed of young social media rich celebrities who rose quickly to fame and to others who can learn from his mistakes.
