THE RISE OF “MBOLE” MUSIC IN CAMEROON

Mbolé, a dynamic music genre originating from the Nkoldongo district of Yaoundé in the early 2000s, has experienced a remarkable ascent in popularity, particularly since 2016.

Initially flourishing in local ceremonies like funeral wakes, Mbolé captivated audiences with its lively rhythms reminiscent of Bikutsi music. Voice of America reported that Malongo Belinga is the creator of musical rhythm Mbolé.

“Mbolé is the grandson of bikutsi and the nephew of makossa, but when you hear it, you feel immediately Cameroonian,” said Lionel Malongo Belinga, who performs under the name of Petit Malo. _{(Voice of America)}

In its early days, Mbolé featured animated performances led by pioneers such as Bertrand Loïc, Aristide Mpacko, and Phil Massinga. Utilizing simple percussion instruments like pots and buckets, accompanied by hand-clapping, Mbolé artists sang about daily life and community experiences.

As the genre evolved, the introduction of instruments like the djembe, a large West African drum, added depth and complexity to Mbolé music. DJ Lexus le Monstre played a pivotal role in bringing Mbolé to recording studios, collaborating with artists like Petit Malo, Petit Bozard to produce its first recorded tracks.

From its humble beginnings in Nkoldongo, Mbolé quickly gained traction across Yaoundé, particularly in marginalized neighborhoods. Its fusion of traditional Cameroonian rhythms with contemporary influences resonated with audiences, leading to its widespread adoption at weddings, baptisms, and other celebrations.

Since around 2016, Mbolé has emerged as a mainstream music genre in Cameroon, with its infectious beats and authentic Cameroonian sound captivating listeners nationwide. Its popularity surged as it found its way onto television and radio stations, cementing its status as a beloved part of the country’s musical landscape.

Today, Mbolé stands as a testament to Cameroon’s rich cultural heritage and musical innovation, blending tradition with modernity to create a distinctly Cameroonian musical experience. With its roots firmly planted in local traditions and its sights set on broader horizons, Mbolé continues to evolve and captivate audiences both at home and abroad.
