In the early days of 2015, came to the limelight what many would consider the revolution of Ghanaian dance hall and Afro pop music. The thorn in the flesh of many men. Her lyrics never favored men. She used her music to tell her story.
Ebony Reigns whose real name is Priscilia Opoku, revised Ghana dance hall music for her the time she existed. She was born on February 16, 1997 in Kumasi and after coming to the limelight in 2015 with an irresistible talent, she lasted only three years in the game as she died on February 8, 2018 in a car accident.
Ebony the “bad girl”, left so unexpectedly but for just three years in the game, did what many haven’t been able to do in double that time. She did not leave any stone unturned. She was a dance hall feminists who rooted for women with her ridiculing lyrics. She was the biggest dance hall revelation in West Africa in 2017. Apparently the best Ghana has ever had and might ever have.
It is fair to say her revolution was a pretty short one as she went too soon, but every crumb of her legacy and talent cannot be forgotten. Ever since her death two years ago, no Ghanaian female dance hall singer has been able to make the Ebony-like attempt to revise Ghanaian music and give it a new look. She did it effortlessly.
Today we pay the legendary Ghanaian queen tribute for what she did for music when she was alive, though she continues to live on. Listen to the following song and discover why she wasn’t loved by many “men”.
