The UEFA Champions League starts this evening with a new look that promises to bring more games, more excitement and more challenges for the best clubs in Europe. The 2025-26 edition is different from any that fans have known before. For the first time the competition has 36 teams in the league phase instead of the old 32 that were divided into groups. The group stage as people used to call it no longer exists. In its place there is now a league phase where every team plays 8 matches against 8 different opponents. 4 of these matches are played at home and 4 away.
At the end of the league phase the top 8 teams in the standings will go straight into the round of 16. Those that finish between 9th and 24th will have to fight for their survival in a play off round which is played over 2 legs. The winners of these ties will join the top 8 in the round of 16. For the teams that finish from 25th to 36th there is no second chance. They are eliminated from Europe completely and will not drop into the Europa League as was the case in the past. This change makes the competition more intense and punishes teams that cannot stay consistent.
This season also marks the arrival of new faces. 4 clubs are making their debut in the league phase. Bodø Glimt from Norway, Kairat from Kazakhstan, Pafos from Cyprus and Union Saint Gilloise from Belgium are all appearing at this stage for the first time. Each of them is already making history. Kairat is the easternmost club ever to play in the Champions League while Bodø Glimt is the northernmost club, based inside the Arctic Circle. Union Saint Gilloise represents the strong revival of Belgian football while Pafos is the first Cypriot side to reach this level under the new format. For the first time since the 2005-06 season no Ukrainian team has qualified which shows how competitive the qualification rounds have become.
The schedule is also different. The league phase starts today, September 16th, and will run until the end of January. This means fans will enjoy Champions League football in the middle of winter for the first time. Each team plays 8 games spread across 8 matchdays. Most of the games will be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but there will be a special week where matches are also played on Thursday to allow all 36 teams to feature. On the final matchday of the league phase all the games will be played at the same time to protect fairness and avoid any possibility of match fixing. After January the competition moves into the knockout play offs, the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and then the grand final.
There are also some new rules. Clubs are now allowed to replace 1 outfield player temporarily if he suffers a long term injury or illness, but this can only be done up to matchday 6 of the league phase. Another important change is that teams that are eliminated at the end of the league phase will not drop into the Europa League. Once a team is out of the Champions League their European journey ends for that season. The draw for fixtures is also managed carefully. Teams are placed into pots based on their UEFA coefficient and each one faces 2 opponents from each pot. UEFA tries to avoid giving clubs too many opponents from the same domestic league so that the competition feels truly continental.
The size of the competition has grown. With 36 teams each playing 8 matches there are more games than in the past when the group stage had 32 teams and only 6 matches each. This increase means more football for fans to enjoy and more chances for teams to prove themselves against strong opponents.
This evening the action finally begins. The first fixtures are Athletic Club against Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven against Union Saint Gilloise. Real Madrid also step into the competition tonight with a big game at home against Olympique de Marseille. Paris Saint Germain who are the defending champions will start their campaign at home against Atalanta tomorrow.
For Paris Saint Germain this season is especially important. They won their first ever Champions League title last season when they beat Inter Milan 5-0 in Munich. That triumph gave them the long awaited European crown, but it also put them under pressure to show that they could defend it. Their squad has not changed too much which gives them the advantage of continuity and team chemistry. However many experts have reminded fans that being champions does not guarantee an easy ride. Last season PSG nearly stumbled in the league phase and had to recover late to stay alive. This time every opponent will be eager to beat them and test their resolve as holders of the trophy.
The UEFA Champions League has always been the biggest club competition in the world, but this season it takes on a new shape and greater size. With fresh rules, new teams making history, and the biggest stars in world soccer all aiming for glory, the 2025-26 season promises drama from start to finish. Tonight begins a journey that will last until the final in May, and millions of fans around the world will be watching to see which club rises above the rest.
