As an artist, one of the Lessons you have to learn from artists like Mr May D and Nami Nami Cyrus is that going up is easier than staying there. Never in a life time feel comfortable when you are at the peak of your career. The slightest wind can take you down, it is true you can never be too careful, but there are things you can avoid and being too comfortable is one of those things.
Let some motivational speakers not fool that “No one” can put a stop to your shine. If someone can give you your shine, the same or some other person can take it away, so be very guided.
If you think no one can truly put an end to your career, try to look into the careers of artists listed here. Mr. May D for one is that one talent who amazed Africa. It is still unclear to people what actually transpired between himself and #P_Square. His appearance to the spotlight was electric.
He is among the pioneer Nigerian artists who took Nigerian music global but a problem between himself and Square Records who had signed him would see him go low.
He almost became nonexistent after his spell with the Record. He failed to realised that no matter how good they were as a team, he wasn’t one of the P-squares. He was just an artist signed to the label and not the group though they had several projects together.
According to label record Jude Okoye, circumstances that led to him firing May D from the label were based on the artist’s ungrateful habit.
“I reached out to him weeks after I gave him the contract to sign, but he told me the contract doesn’t include incentives like car, house, cash….etc”, Jude said angrily. He claims he gave May D everything May D needed from house to cars. It seems like the artist wanted more. It led to his fall from grace. This happened between 2012/2013. Since that time, the artist has been struggling to revive his career but it doesn’t seem to get better.
Nami Nami Cyrus is one the most gifted Cameroonian rappers who saw his talent bringing him joy but the joy was short lived. He was signed to #Empire_Company and even had a couple of projects with Pit Baccardi who is CEO of the company and who was responsible for signing Cyrus.
Cyrus was promising under the label until things began to fall apart. The artist had a problem with the label and even went online to throw jibes at the company. Bad strategy!
No record whatsoever will sign an artist without the intentions of making money. Every company will want to tire a productive artist down with a contract, reasons why as an artist, you must not hurry to sign a contract that you won’t” respect. The company will never care if you read or whether you didn’t. Their prayer is for you to put pen to paper. If you are not sure about the contract, don’t sign it. That’s why you need an expert manager or PR or lawyer.
Nami felt used by Empire Company and his approach to dealing with the whole situation was unprofessional. Biting the finger that used to feed you , is very common especially with artists of this generation. They always curse what they used to bless once they discover a better option.
Even if you don’t like where you are, quietly move away and preserve your career. Once you go ahead to curse or disregard something that someone, somewhere else is looking up to, you automatically block your career unknowingly. Learn from the mistakes of others that talent is not always enough. Never feel comfortable where you should be uncomfortable. There are people who can put a stop on your career and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
