Yesterday, we reposted a photo of Limbe on The HotJem’s Instagram page and received a message asking a simple question: why should anyone visit Limbe? Having spent time there myself, the answer came easily.
Limbe, formerly known as Victoria, is located in Cameroon’s Southwest Region and has long been a favorite stop for travelers heading through the area. Just about two hours from Douala, the country’s economic hub, Limbe often feels like a pause button, a place people pass through, explore briefly, and then move on from. But that understated quality is exactly what makes it special.
Here are three reasons Limbe continues to stand out.
The first thing you notice in Limbe is the air. It feels fresher, lighter, and noticeably cooler than many other cities, thanks to its coastal location and surrounding greenery. While the weather can be humid at times, the seaside atmosphere makes it manageable and inviting. Limbe’s beaches remain a major draw, especially for visitors looking to slow down, enjoy ocean views, and take in the relaxed coastal rhythm. Add in the abundance of fresh seafood, and it’s easy to see why people keep coming back.

Food alone is enough reason to love Limbe. If you’ve spent any time there, you already know roasted fish is practically a signature dish. Served with hot pepper sauce and fried ripe plantains, it dominates menus across local food spots and roadside grills. To this day, some of the best roasted fish experiences I’ve had in Cameroon have been in Limbe. Call it bias if you want, but until proven otherwise, Limbe holds the crown.
Beyond the food and the beaches, Limbe carries a quiet but rich history. Founded in 1858 by British missionary Alfred Saker and later shaped by German colonial administration, the city still reflects its past in subtle ways. German-style buildings remain scattered around town, offering glimpses into another era. The Limbe Botanical Garden is also worth a visit, both for its historical significance and as a peaceful spot for photos and reflection.

Limbe may not always demand attention the way larger cities do, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a place where nature, food, and history meet without trying too hard. For travelers who appreciate atmosphere over spectacle, Limbe remains one of Cameroon’s quiet gems and a destination worth more than just a stop-and-go visit.
