United States Revokes Wole Soyinka’s Visa Leaving The Nobel Laureate Surprised
Nigerian Nobel Prize winner and world famous playwright Professor Wole Soyinka has revealed that the United States has revoked his visa, stopping him from entering the country. The respected writer said he was shocked by the decision and could not understand what could have caused it. The news has drawn attention across the world because Soyinka has always been regarded as one of Africa’s most respected voices in literature and human rights.
Speaking at a media briefing at his Lagos home known as Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Professor Soyinka told reporters that he decided to hold the conference to clarify the situation. He explained that many people in the United States were expecting him for events and lectures but he would not be able to attend any of them since his visa had been cancelled. In his own words, he said, “It is necessary for me to hold this conference so that people in the United States who are expecting me for this event or that event do not waste their time. I have no visa. I am banned obviously from the United States. And if you want to see me, you know where to find me.”
Professor Soyinka also shared a letter he received from the United States Consulate General in Lagos. The letter instructed him to submit his passport for the physical cancellation of his visa. According to reports, the letter explained that the visa was being revoked because “additional information became available” after it had already been issued. This means that the United States government must have reviewed his visa and found some new details that made them change their decision. However, no clear explanation has been given about what this information was or why it led to the cancellation.
So far, the United States Embassy in Nigeria has not made any public comment about the case. There has been no official statement confirming or denying the reason behind the revocation. Many people have been left wondering whether it was a mistake, a new policy, or something more personal. Because of the lack of details, the decision remains surrounded by uncertainty.
Wole Soyinka is one of the most respected writers in the world. He became the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, an achievement that made him an international figure. Over the years he has been known not only for his plays and essays but also for his strong criticism of injustice, corruption, and dictatorship. He has always spoken boldly about political and social issues in Nigeria and beyond. Many people believe that his outspoken nature might sometimes make him unpopular with authorities, but it is not clear if this has anything to do with the current visa issue.
It is not the first time that Wole Soyinka’s relationship with the United States has attracted public attention. In 2016, he famously tore up his American green card as a protest after Donald Trump was elected President. At that time he said it was a personal decision because he felt uncomfortable keeping permanent residency in a country whose political direction he disagreed with. However, he continued to visit the United States afterward for lectures, academic programs, and cultural events. This time, however, he has been completely barred from entering, which is a more serious matter.
Many Nigerians have reacted with surprise and disappointment. Some say that revoking the visa of such a respected global intellectual is unfair and sends the wrong message. Others argue that the United States must have valid reasons and that the full story is not yet known. Whatever the case, the development has become a major topic of discussion among academics, artists, and human rights supporters around the world.
Professor Soyinka has taken the matter calmly, saying he will continue his work in Nigeria and elsewhere. He told journalists that anyone who wishes to see him can find him at his home in Lagos. He also hinted that he would continue writing and speaking publicly about important social issues. As a man who has lived through imprisonment, exile, and political persecution in the past, he seems unshaken by this latest event.
The cancellation of Wole Soyinka’s visa raises important questions about international diplomacy and the treatment of global figures who have contributed so much to literature and freedom of expression. It also shows that even the most respected personalities can face unexpected challenges when dealing with immigration and visa procedures. Until the United States provides more information, the reasons behind the decision will remain unclear. But one thing is certain: Wole Soyinka’s influence and legacy as one of Africa’s greatest thinkers will continue to shine regardless of any borders or restrictions.
