The month of July, didn’t really end well for Ameriican comedienne and actor – Tifanny Haddish, who went under serious backlash across social media, after she posted a clip of a grocery store during her visit to Zimbabwe.
In Haddish’s viral clip, she was quite surprised to have seen a grocery store in Zimbabwe. The video she published on Tiktok, immediately caused an uproar when most African internet users came across it. They found her clueless and didn’t take it lightly with her.
However, she later took to X, formerly Twitter to defend herself against netizens who has misconstrued the aim og her post.
“I am an American, a Black one at that, and told for years that people are starving in Africa, showed pictures of babies with flies on them.” – Haddish responded.
It’s quite unbelievable, that in 2024, most westerners still believe that Africa isn’t modernized, even with the coming of social media. Haddish, just like some other Americans who’ve never been to Africa blame the media for misleading narratives.
The picture that has been painted about the African continent over the years by the media, is archaic and Africans must take the responsibility to fix the narrative or else, things like these will continue to happen.
Haddish’s video was blown out of proportion, but you can’t blame people who found her video disrespectful. It’s important to give her credit for clearing the air and also helping to sensitize about how great Africa is.
