WHAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT KOMODO DRAGONS APPETITE
The Komodo Dragon happens to be the largest lizard specie and is found predominantly in Indonesia. It’s comes from the Monitor lizard family and is often called The Komodo Dragon, because it’s mostly found in Komodo. It’s also known to be the most poisonous and the most powerful of all lizard species and possesses up to 60 teeth.
One thing that might surprise you about this specie, is that its appetite dramatically matches its size. These lizards are capable of eating as much as 80% of their own body weight at once.
How can a Komodo Dragon’s appetite match their size?
Big meals and slow digestion prompt Komodo dragons to lounge in the sun after eating. The heat helps keep their digestion process working and after they digest their food, they will regurgitate what is known as a gastric pellet. Similar to owl pellets, a gastric pellet contains horns, hair, teeth, and other bits of prey that can’t be digested. Due to their fairly slow metabolism a Komodo dragon can pound down so much in a single sitting. Komodo dragons can survive on as little as one meal a month.
In areas where Komodos are mostly available, the people of Indonesia no longer dig graves in sandy areas. Instead, they use clay ground to dig graves with the aid of stones put in the grave, so as to prevent this huge creatures from destroying graves to exhume corpses.
