André Onana’s future at Manchester United is one of the biggest talking points at the club right now, and his situation has become even more complicated with recent developments. After arriving at Old Trafford with high expectations, the Cameroonian goalkeeper has had a mixed time in goal. There have been moments where his shot-stopping ability and ball distribution were praised, but there have also been mistakes that made fans and pundits question whether he is the right number one for United. This uncertainty has now been made worse by injuries, competition for his place, and links with other goalkeepers across Europe.
At the beginning of the new season Onana picked up a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the Premier League opener against Arsenal. In his absence Altay Bayındır was trusted to start, but his display did little to ease nerves. He made a costly error in that game which helped Arsenal to victory, and it raised doubts about United’s goalkeeper depth. Bayındır was also given another chance in the second match, but supporters did not feel reassured by his performances. Many pointed out that while he has had good moments in the past, such as his strong showing in the FA Cup earlier this year, he still lacks the consistency required at the highest level.
Because of this fragile goalkeeping situation, Manchester United were linked with several options. One of the most surprising rumors came in August when reports claimed the club had shown interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma of Paris Saint Germain. Donnarumma is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, and PSG were even open to selling him after signing a younger keeper. For a while, it looked like United might try to take advantage of the situation. However, the club’s transfer priorities shifted, and reliable reports made it clear that United would not move for Donnarumma. Instead, the board and manager Rúben Amorim decided to strengthen in midfield and look for a cheaper young goalkeeper to develop for the future rather than signing a superstar.
This is where Senne Lammens comes in. The Belgian goalkeeper from Royal Antwerp is very close to completing a move to Manchester United for around £17 million. He is still only in the early stages of his career and will not arrive as an immediate replacement for Onana, but his signing is a clear message that the club wants more competition in goal. With Onana returning to fitness and Lammens about to join, United will have three senior goalkeepers fighting for one position. For Onana this is a test of character and form, because although Amorim has publicly defended him and encouraged him to put mistakes behind him, he knows the pressure is real and any slip in concentration could open the door for his rivals.
The way forward depends heavily on Onana himself. If he recovers his confidence and delivers the calm and commanding performances that made him one of the best in Europe at Ajax and Inter Milan, then he will likely keep his place as first choice. But if his errors continue or if Bayındır or Lammens step up with strong displays, then his long term role could be questioned. Amorim’s style of management emphasizes accountability and resilience, so this period will be crucial for the Cameroonian to show he has the mental strength to lead the team from the back.
Right now, Onana’s future at United is balanced on a thin line. He still has the backing of his coach, and the Donnarumma story has cooled down, but the signing of Lammens shows the club is preparing for all possibilities. Supporters remain divided, some urging patience while others demand more consistency from a player who was supposed to be the solution to United’s goalkeeping problems. The next few months will tell whether Onana can silence the doubts and secure his place as the man between the posts or whether United will continue to explore alternatives as they build under Amorim.
