This might sound unbelievable, but did you know that there’s a town in Alaska called Whittier, where almost all its population lives under one roof ?
Whittier is situated in Southern Alsaka, north of U.S.A, and what makes the town remarkable is that everything the population there, needs from: Post office, market, school, church, Mayor’s office, and more, are all available in building. This building is called the Begich Tower. This tower is a single 14-story building.
The town, which is cut from the rest of the world from 10:30 PM whenever the tunnel closes, suffers from brutal winter weathers every year.
In fact, in 1964, the town sustained a 9.2 earthquake, which remains the largest ever recorded till date. The extensive damage caused by the earthquake cost $10 million according to multiple sources.
Going to Whittier will likely present a series of challenges to tourists, given that the only way to reach this town by car is through the Anderson Memorial Tunnel which is the longest. It’s a journey of 2.5 miles. It’s designed for -40 Fahrenheit temperatures and 150mph winds. The tunnel was upgraded in 2000, and now has rail tracks which facilitate transportation via trains.
Visitors could also reach this destination via a boat. The Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery train is a convenient option for getting to Whittier with one daily departure from Anchorage depot at 9:45 AM during the summer months according to Anchorage to Whittier Transportation. The train drops passengers right infront of the Whittier cruise ship terminal.
This location has been hyped by many visitors, for its attractions like dense forests and more, especially during the summer. Also, it’s weather conditions are not all great at all times but it’s clear the inhabitants here love everything about their place.
