Hello Jemnites! It’s me again…your bestie is here! Today I decided to introduce my first Woman Crush Wednesday (WCW)! Oh yes you heard that right… My female (not male) crush! I am all about celebrating and empowering women and I thought it was great timing as the collage (see below) of the beautiful lady I have a crush on today, was the center of a hot topic on Facebook!! Her name is Tina and she is one of the sweetest people I have known! She is also a well-known vlogger on YouTube (if you haven’t checked out her videos yet then you are living in the dark ages) and she is my first #WCW!!! Oh and she is from CAMEROON!!! YEAAH!
So earlier today I had a chat with one of my blogger friends Yefon Mainsah of I Rep Camer (check out her page) about black women and how they love to classify hair by “good hair” versus “bad hair” and that I have seen this being done even in the natural hair community. When I say natural I mean hair that has not been processed or permed and is in its natural state.
Well guess what? She went ahead and posted this on her Facebook page and it brought about a huge debate about black women and their natural hair!!! She posted it as “Why is natural hair suddenly a big deal in Camer? No one for the longest didn’t want to “nappy connect”. Why you no di relax your hair? the beauty of a woman is in her hair etc. And apparently it is also a status thing cause they use “expensive products” smh.”
(Translated as ” Why is natural hair suddenly a big deal in Cameroon? No one for the longest time wanted to “connect with their natural nappy hair”. Why are you not perming your nappy hair? The beauty of a woman is in her hair etc. And apparently it is also a status thing because they use “expensive products” shaking my head.”)
Over 150 comments (as of the time of this post) were posted in response to the above question and this just confirmed my original intent of my discussion with her which was basically; why do we always have to have a label to anything that has to define black beauty? For example (and this is just an example of what I noticed and I could be wrong), a lot of black women with natural hair which looks thick and long tend to be more popular on their blogs and vlogs and have a huge following versus black women who have natural hair that is shorter (like Lupita Nyong’o) and/or whose hair isn’t as thick. The former is usually considered “beautiful hair” compared to the latter hair. This is just my observation and again I am not debating on this. Its just me thinking out loud based on what I have observed and have heard from people. Does one’s hair have to be thick and long in either it’s permed or natural hair state to be considered “beautiful hair” or can it be short and thick or short and thin and still be beautiful? What do you think?
Anyway, going back to the original intention of today’s blog topic… my Woman Crush Wednesday is the beautiful Tina!! Why? Because I admire her as a person and as a friend (I love that she sometimes gets me Crumbs Cupcakes in NYC lol) and she sure does know how to keep her tresses healthy and beautiful! Now that is what I call devotion and you have to watch her videos to see what I am saying! I love watching her vlogs and I’m sure you would too so check her out on YouTube as MissT1806!
