5. Labels don’t hire professionals
An examination of the executive staff within most Cameroonian labels sheds light on another prevalent issue: the failure to hire professionals. Many labels lack dedicated professionals to oversee their operations. Instances have been observed where a single individual assumes multiple roles, such as CEO, communicator, artist, artist manager, and video director. This practice is inherently flawed, considering the diverse and demanding responsibilities associated with each position. Despite the individual’s efficiency, they inevitably face limitations, unable to be present in multiple roles simultaneously.
The solution lies in labels investing more in hiring professionals across various departments, as efficient human resource management invariably results in superior products.
In their defense, many labels in Cameroon are owned by individuals striving to navigate entrepreneurial endeavors without substantial government support. While this reality may explain certain shortcomings, it remains our hope that these labels strive for professionalism to attract potential foreign investors. Consider this: Would you invest in an unprofessional record label? If your answer is NO, then why would anyone invest in a label lacking basic professionalism?
The aforementioned five points summarizes our perspective, developed through research and insightful interviews with individuals deeply involved in the workings of labels within the Cameroon music scene. We invite you to assess whether you resonate with these assertions. Do you agree with these viewpoints, or do you have differing opinions?”
